Apple Jack High Ball: 1943

Apple Jack High Ball: 1943

"Roy" with locomotive in Alaska. Looks a bit like Bill Murray in Caddyshack. Roy was working on the expansion of the Alaska railroad network with the U.S. Army 714th Railway Battalion to support the World War II effort in 1943. Photo by Don Symonds of Sandusky, Ohio. Photo says "Apple Jack, High Ball". Perhaps someone out there knows what that means.

High Ball

The railroad term high-ball comes from a signal which consisted of a ball run up to the top of a pole, letting the engineer know that the track ahead was clear. Maybe that's what Roy is pretending to be. I'm not sure about the apple jack.
