Kennebec Ice / Great Falls Ice Company horse-drawn wagon at Birney Public School, Washington, D.C.. African American school children lined up with teacher behind the wagon. James G. Birney Elementary School was D.C.'s first public school for blacks, located in Hillsdale. The location corresponds to the current address of 2427 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, SE.
